VOLUME SIXTY-TWO
TITO'S MARKET
Today’s spot is on the edge of the Ford Food map. I’ll stop off in Rowland Heights or Pomona every once in a while, but in terms of what makes it into my regular rotation, El Monte is about as far east as I’ll drive. It’s a bit of a hike, but this spot… this spot is worth it. It’s “extremely” on the deliciousness scale.
Tito’s Market is an Argentinian sandwich shop, quick service food counter, and butcher. You’re coming here for the sandwiches, especially the hot ones. Started in 1971, this spot is still in the family and still packed at lunch. There is always a line, but I’ve never waited more than ten minutes for my food. Their bread should be talked about all around town. It should come up in casual conversation. It’s got a stellar crunch and a pillowy soft interior that soaks up the juices from whatever protein you choose. Are these the best sandwiches in LA? In terms of execution, variety, and cost – I think so. It’s a tough category, but Tito’s is a contender.
Here’s what I’d get: There are twenty-one hot sandwiches on the menu – not counting the burgers. Absolutely get one of these. Their cold cut sandwiches are on the same bread, but they’re standard – if you’re here, get something hot. FYI, they put a little star on the menu next to the most popular options – use those stars as your guiding light if you’re lost.
My favorites are the Milanesa de Res (breaded steak), the Fajitas de Pollo (perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken chopped up with peppers and onions), and the Chorizo Argentino. The Chorizo is so stupid good. With any of these sandwiches, you can add their housemade jalapeno relish, and you have to do it. Do not skip this. It’s an incredible condiment that I wish they sold by the jar. Finally, throw a couple of beef empanadas into that order and maybe some ribs too. They list full-on ribs as a side, which I love.
Easy parking. Closed Mondays.
