VOLUME SIXTY-SIX
MR. GOODS DONUTS
Sometimes you just need a good donut, and no other sweet will suffice. Los Angeles is home to an abundance of shops – fancy and regular – and though I’ve done no research to confirm this, it feels like it has the highest concentration of donut shops per capita in the country.
My favorite donut shop in the LA area is currently Mr. Goods Donuts in Pasadena. They make the best apple fritters I’ve ever had, and that is a top-three donut for me. Do not go here without getting one. It’s run by a really sweet family who remembered me on my second visit, even though it came weeks after my first. “You like the apple fritter, right?” (Probably because I kept saying “this is the best apple fritter I’ve ever had” over and over again til I passed out.)
Here’s what to order: An apple fritter. It’s big, sweet (but not too), and full of apples. I want at least a 60/40 ratio of donut to apple, and they hit this mark. Then ask them what’s still hot – whatever it is, get that. Donuts are sublime when fresh and degrade to only “great” after that. I really like their Blueberry Donut, Boston Cream, Old Fashioned, and their Classic Glazed, too. Donuts are a personal journey, though, so follow your heart.
